Tech Review: Pre-Packed Wells Stole the Show at Legion Workshops

Legion Drilling workshops were attended by contaminated land and geotechnical consultants and managers interested in learning more about site investigation technologies

Last month, Legion Drilling completed 4 workshops on Site Investigation Technologies at our Brisbane and Sydney depots. They were designed with junior contaminated land and geotechnical engineers in mind, although everyone was welcomed and we received awesome feedback.

The Brisbane sessions were conducted at the same time as a due diligence investigation at our facilities, making possible for one of the workshop groups to witness the installation of a pre-packed well.

Pre-packed wells represent an alternative to conventional monitoring well systems in unconsolidated and unstable formations. They consist of a slotted inner pipe surrounded by a uniform layer of filter material, which is encased within a protective outer mesh or jacket. This design ensures proper emplacement of the filter pack and simplifies the installation process by combining the well screen and filter pack into a single unit.

The installation can be done using hollow stem augers. However, to expedite the process, we often use direct-push technology with a Dual Tube 4.5" (DT45) system, which enables faster installations and produces minimal waste, making it particularly attractive in potentially contaminated, unstable formations.

We will keep organising these workshops periodically. If you want to hear more about pre-packed wells and other technologies, you can register your interest using the link below and we will inform you when we run a new session:
