Sampling Disturbance in Geotechnical Practice: Webinar Recording

The Importance of Sampling Disturbance in Geotechncal Practice - July 2025

Prof. Jubert Pineda from the University of Newcastle walked us through the different stages of sampling, from drilling and sample collection to extrusion and sample preparation for lab testing. He discussed the benefits and limitations of the samplers most commonly employed in Australia for soft soils and options like mini-block samplers that remain underused by the industry. He also presented recent research developments for the assessment of sample disturbance using cutting-edge technology (think CT scans and beyond!).

Whether you are in consulting (geotechnical, tailings, geo-environmental), mining, or government, this is a great opportunity to gain actionable insights from a leading expert in the field. Check it out!

Speaker: Prof. Jubert Pineda has been involved in several research and consulting projects related with unsaturated soil mechanics, stability analysis of dams founded on argillaceous rocks as well as with high-quality sampling in soft soils at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). His current research interests include unsaturated soils and rocks, mechanics of natural soft clays, and more recently geo-engineering problems related to energy and sustainability. Prof. Jubert Pineda teaches courses on Geotechnical Site Characterization and Geomechanics at the Priority Research Centre for Geotechnical Science and Engineering (PRCGSE), School of Environment in the University of Newcastle.
