Legion Drilling Returns to Melbourne & Victoria!

Legion Drilling is finally back in regional Victoria with one of our crews and a Geoprobe & CPT rig permanently based in Wodonga, which will also be our launchpad for larger Geotechnical and Sonic drilling rigs.

The director of Legion Drilling, Matthew Hansen started his drilling career with Numac in Melbourne over 20 years ago, where it grew to become a leader in the environmental and geotechnical drilling market. The introduction of Geoprobe rigs in Australia represented a revolution for the contaminated land industry, enabling the collection of high-integrity samples avoiding cross-contamination issues. The early adoption of sonic and direct sensing technologies has contributed to Legion's success and its growth in regions like the Bowen Basin, Nth QLD and the Hunter Valley.

In 2021 Hansen went out on his own with Legion Drilling. As fate would have it just months after kicking off operations Covid hit. With crews and trucks frequently travelling interstate, border restrictions quickly impacted the entire organisation. This forced a difficult decision: to close our Melbourne office relocating all rigs to NSW and QLD. While this led to spectacular growth in these states, it also meant losing many long-standing connections in our home state VIC.

Now almost 5 years later, Legion are back in Victoria ready to provide drilling services regional areas and Melbourne! We have permanently established a crew and a multi-purpose Geoprobe 77/78 rig and a Track mounted Geotechnical drilling rig in Wodonga. From this new base, we will provide better support to our clients in Melbourne, regional VIC, NSW and the ACT, where our Geoprobe will be able to assist with the following methods:

  • Solid and hollow stem augering

  • Continuous push tube sampling, piston sampling

  • SPT & Shelby tubes

  • Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), DMT, Seismic CPTu, VST, HPT, MIP, LIF-UVOST, etc.

  • Air rotary

  • Installation of wells, VWPs and other instruments

  • In-situ injection of remedial amendments

The depot will also serve as a base for larger rotary and sonic rigs mobilising to sites in VIC and regional NSW. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any upcoming jobs in the area.
