The name Legion was chosen with intention. It stands for the high standards, unity, strength, and professionalism we are building towards — a benchmark that takes real commitment and continuous effort to live up to. From the very beginning, the name itself has acted as a quiet but powerful driver, pushing us to improve, to raise our game, and to deliver work that reflects the weight and responsibility the name carries.
That drive for higher standards has deep roots. In 2004, Matthew Hansen began working as a casual offsider in contaminated land and geotechnical drilling in 2004. In the early years he was integral player in the introduction of Geoprobe rigs to Australia, a revolution at the time pushing soil sampling to a higher standard. In 2013 Matt oversaw the introduction of Sonic drilling rigs the space, quickly recognising their potential to deliver far superior sample recovery and data quality in the country’s challenging and varied ground conditions. Alongside sonic technology, Hansen underwent specialist training with Geoprobe in the USA in advanced direct-sensing tools such as UVOST and MiHPT, opening new possibilities for high-resolution understanding of subsurface conditions. These early steps laid the technical foundation for what would later become Legion Drilling.
In 2021 Legion Drilling was born. The name Legion had purpose one that demands consistency, professionalism, pride in every metre drilled, and a genuine commitment to getting better every day. With this foundation in place, the company grew rapidly, establishing strategic depots in Brisbane, Sydney, Townsville, Albury-Wodonga, and Darwin to provide reliable national coverage while staying responsive to local needs.
The same drive to live up to the name has guided our expansion into advanced services. Legion now delivers sophisticated in-situ remediation through precision drilling and high-pressure injection. Using technologies such as BOS 200® (activated carbon with biological amendments for hydrocarbon contamination) and BOS 100®/CAT100® (Trap & Treat® approaches for chlorinated solvents), combined with high-resolution site characterisation, we provide targeted, effective clean-up solutions that minimise rebound and deliver measurable environmental outcomes.
Every aspect of Legion Drilling — from sonic and geotechnical drilling to environmental site investigation and remediation injection — is shaped by the standard the name represents.
